Vital information for rape and sexual assault survivors

Sexual assault is not something that most people talk about, so survivors of it often feel isolated. However, it is happening and it is happening in epidemic proportions. According to the 2000 National Crime Victimization Survey, there were 261,000 sexual assaults in the United States during the year 2000. 114,000 were victims of sexual assault, 55,000 were victims of attempted rape, and 92,000 were victims of completed rape. This number does not include children under the age of twelve, which would increase these numbers substantially. About 72% of sexual assaults go unreported. I would definitely call this a silent epidemic.

However, as someone who speaks out about my rape, I can attest to the truth of these statistics. I can't tell you how many times people have confided in me that they were also raped. Other times, people will say something like, "I have never been raped, but..." and tell me a story of how they were sexually assaulted or escaped being raped through luck or strategy

Even if we have not been raped, our lives are all touched by sexual assault. No one is free from it. Can you name a woman who has not felt fear of rape at one point in time? Or a man who has not feared for the women he loves? Sexual assault is everyone's problem.

I have created these pages primarily to aid sexual assault survivors through their journeys, but also to demystify rape and sexual assault. I hope you find this information to be helpful.
